Downloading Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0

Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 is available free from the Adobe site for Windows XP, 2000, ME, NT, and 98SE. It is also available for Mac OS X. Adobe does not offer Reader version 6.0 for older versions of Windows (original version 98, 95, 3.1, etc.) or Mac OS 9 or lower.

However, this is a multiple-step process, and may take some time if you have a dial-up connection. To help you with the download process, you may want to print out this page and use as a guideline through the process.

Downloading Acrobat Reader with a Dial-up Connection and Accessing your Document

If you connect to the Internet using a dial-up service, like AOL, Earthlink, a local ISP, or other similar set, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.[When you click on this link, it will open up in a separate browser window, so you will still have access to this instructions page.]

  2. Scroll down and select the appropriate answers for Language, Platform, and Connection Speed.

  3. Once you have made your selections, Step 2 of 2 options should appear. You have two choices:

    • download the basic version (approximately 30 minutes using a 56K modem), which will require a second download later in order to view your Online on Demand document. In this situation, just scroll to the bottom and click the red Download button.

    • download the full version (1 hour or more using a 56K modem). To select this, check the first checkbox option, then scroll down and click the red Download button.

  4. Once the file has been downloaded to your PC, double-click on the file to install the Reader. This may take several minutes.

  5. When the Reader is fully installed, you can return to your Web confirmation or e-mail confirmation and click on the link to download your Online on Demand document(s).

    1. If you downloaded the full version of the software, it will automatically open Acrobat Reader and download the files to your Bookshelf in the Reader. If you have ordered more than one document, one document will open and others will be accessible through the Bookshelf. If this is the first time, you have downloaded an online document, Adobe will require you go through the DRM Activator.

    2. If you have downloaded the basic version, Acrobat Reader will launch and will note that you need to download another component.

      1. Click OK. This eBook component takes between 6 and 12 minutes to download.

      2. Once the download is complete, it will ask you if you want to install the update. Click on Install Now.

      3. When the installation is complete, go back to your confirmation page (e-mail or web) and click on the download link. The document should download to your Acrobat Reader Bookshelf for viewing and printing.

More details on downloading your online document are also available.
